Marijuana Valued at $5.1 Million Seized from Commercial Vehicle at World Trade Bridge

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) made a significant drug bust, seizing over $5 million worth of marijuana from a commercial vehicle at the World Trade Bridge in Laredo, Texas.

On Sunday, June 23, 2024, CBP officers directed a 2009 International tractor-trailer, driven by a 38-year-old Mexican citizen, for a secondary inspection. The truck also had a 33-year-old passenger onboard.

Using advanced techniques including a canine unit and non-intrusive inspection systems, officers discovered 98 packages containing a total of 2,323.67 pounds of marijuana hidden within the trailer. The estimated street value of the seized marijuana is $5,198,328.

In addition to confiscating the marijuana, CBP also seized the truck and trailer. Both individuals in the vehicle were arrested and are facing charges related to drug smuggling.

“Frontline officers at the World Trade Bridge demonstrated exceptional effort in successfully disrupting this drug smuggling attempt,” said Port Director Alberto Flores of the Laredo Port of Entry. “This large drug bust is a prime example of the efficient targeting strategies utilized in the cargo environment to help combat the flow of narcotics seeping into our communities.”

This significant seizure highlights the ongoing efforts of CBP to prevent illegal drugs from entering the United States, ensuring the safety and security of our communities.
